Abbotsford Convent in association with Melbourne Fringe presents a laboratory intensive for artists/groups working in contemporary performance for children under 13

Valuing a Young Audience is a supported two-stage creative intensive for artists or groups who are curious about the art of making contemporary performance for children, to be held in July 2023.  Three successful applicants will also present showings of work-in-progress for feedback from children and families in Melbourne Fringe 2023.

Sue Giles AM has been commissioned by Abbotsford Convent to develop and lead the intensive, appointing experts in the field of participatory arts practice to facilitate artistic exchange, development of practice and offer provocations.

The Convent is keen to see work created for children and babies under 3, and ideas for outdoor settingsnon-conventional spaces and our unique venues.

Who is this call for?

  • Artists and makers who wish to create contemporary performance for children and are available for all dates mentioned above.
  • People with experience with this audience who have an idea that requires investment to develop.
  • People who are new to, and wish to begin, creating contemporary performance for children.
  • Artists who want to push the boundaries of contemporary performance experiences for children.
  • Artists who reside in Victoria.

Selection criteria

  • Commitment and capacity of the artist(s)/collective/organisation to attend ALL dates of the two-stage intensive.
  • A concept, yet to be developed, for a contemporary performance work for children.
  • A demonstrated track record in contemporary performance for children and/or wider audiences.

Applicants with interest in engaging children and babies aged 0 — 3 years are encouraged.
